Artificial intelligence is set to get a massive infrastructure boost in the United States as OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank revealed plans to build five new AI data centers under the ambitious Stargate project. This private sector initiative backed by President Donald Trump is expected to cost up to $500 billion and aims to generate 10 gigawatts of data center capacity.
Expansion across key states
OpenAI confirmed that three of the new sites will be developed in partnership with Oracle in Shackelford County in Texas, Dona Ana County in New Mexico and at an undisclosed location in the Midwest. Two additional sites will be constructed in Lordstown, Ohio and Milam County, Texas by OpenAI together with SoftBank and its affiliate.
These new facilities will expand on the Oracle OpenAI site in Abilene, Texas as well as ongoing projects with CoreWeave. Together, they will bring Stargate’s total data center capacity close to 7 gigawatts and more than $400 billion in investment over the next three years. The long term goal remains a staggering 10 gigawatts in total capacity, setting new records for AI compute power.
A push for global AI leadership
The announcement follows Nvidia’s pledge to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and supply advanced chips for data center operations. OpenAI and its partners also plan to use debt financing to lease these chips, ensuring that the infrastructure keeps pace with the rapid growth of generative AI services like ChatGPT and Copilot.
“AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, underlining the critical importance of infrastructure.
The project is expected to create 25,000 onsite jobs, driving economic activity in the regions where these centers are being built. With global competition intensifying and China racing to catch up in AI, the United States is positioning itself at the forefront of technological leadership through massive investments in infrastructure.
Building the future of AI
The Stargate project reflects the growing urgency among both governments and tech companies to scale AI responsibly. With heavy involvement from industry leaders like Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank and Nvidia, the initiative marks a new era in the race to build powerful and secure AI systems.
By combining compute power, capital investment and advanced chip technology, Stargate could become the backbone of the next generation of AI innovation.
