A New Chapter for Nikon and Red

Nikon has entered the cinema camera arena with the launch of the Nikon ZR, a groundbreaking device that combines Nikon’s imaging expertise with Red’s acclaimed color science and codecs. This collaboration follows Nikon’s acquisition of Red in 2024 and marks the debut of Red’s celebrated RAW format in a Nikon body.

Power and Image Quality

At its core, the ZR uses a 24.5 megapixel full frame sensor and Nikon’s EXPEED 7 image processor, borrowed from the Z6III. This combination allows up to 6K recording at 60 frames per second in 12-bit R3D NE RAW, a codec derived directly from Red’s professional cameras. Support for Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB ensures seamless color matching with other REDCODE RAW workflows. With dual base ISO sensitivities of 800 and 6400 and more than 15 stops of dynamic range, the ZR is designed to handle demanding cinematic projects.

Flexible Recording Formats and Creative Tools

Beyond Red RAW, users can record in Nikon’s own N-RAW or Apple’s ProRes RAW. The camera also supports in-camera LUT previews for real-time monitoring. A dedicated cinematic mode simplifies settings by applying Red’s cinematic look with a locked 24p frame rate, 180-degree shutter, and color grade for creators who want instant results without extensive post work.

Professional Audio and Display Features

The Nikon ZR brings high-end audio options with 32-bit float recording and support for both built-in and external microphones. Nokia’s OZO Audio technology offers five polar pickup patterns including super directional, rear, and stereo binaural for versatile sound design. The fully articulating 4-inch display delivers full DCI-P3 color coverage and 1000 nits brightness, making it easy to monitor footage even in challenging environments.

Build and Connectivity

The camera features a magnesium alloy chassis with weather sealing, a front tally light, and automatic rotation support for vertical video. It offers 7.5 stops of image stabilization and advanced autofocus with detection for people, animals, and vehicles. Connectivity includes a headphone jack, micro HDMI output, USB Type-C, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Storage comes through CFExpress cards and a secondary microSD slot, though the absence of XLR inputs and full-size HDMI will be noted by professionals.

Availability and Price

The Nikon ZR will be available starting October at a launch price of 2200 dollars. Kits with bundled lenses will also be offered. With this pricing, Nikon is making a bold move to place advanced cinematic capabilities within reach of a wider group of creators and independent filmmakers.

A Bold Step Into Cinema

The Nikon ZR is more than just another camera. It represents a significant step for Nikon into the world of professional cinema by blending Red’s legendary codec technology with Nikon’s design and usability. For filmmakers seeking high-quality RAW recording, advanced audio tools, and powerful stabilization in a compact package, the Nikon ZR could be one of the most exciting releases of the year.
