Huawei is ready to fold the future once again. Just a year after launching the world’s first commercial tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT Ultimate Design, the company is reportedly preparing to unveil its successor. Leaks suggest the new device, likely called the Huawei Mate XT 2, will debut as early as September in China. And this time, it is not just the engineering that’s getting an upgrade. The new tri-fold phone is expected to arrive in four striking colour options, adding flair to a category known mostly for its tech and not its design.
The original Mate XT arrived in just two shades. Now, according to a leak from popular tipster Digital Chat Station, the Mate XT 2 will be available in black, red, white and purple. Internally codenamed ‘Greenlan’, the device is expected to move from experimental to mainstream with larger-scale production, higher sales targets, and a push for global availability after its Chinese launch.
What makes the Mate XT 2 special is its tri-fold structure. While most foldables on the market offer a single fold, Huawei’s innovation folds the screen in two places, creating a more tablet-like display when opened and a more compact design when closed. This unique form factor allows users to multitask on a much larger display while still fitting the device comfortably in a pocket or small bag.
According to reports, the Mate XT 2 will retain many of the key strengths of its predecessor but will feature major improvements in core hardware. The biggest upgrade is expected in the processor, with the Kirin 9020 replacing the Kirin 9010, promising better performance and efficiency. The camera setup is also likely to be enhanced with a 50 megapixel sensor and a new periscope telephoto lens, along with a variable aperture for better light control. It may also support satellite connectivity, something only a handful of phones currently offer.
While the display size and battery might stay similar to the previous generation, Huawei is focusing on refining the overall user experience. The Mate XT 2 is also expected to challenge Samsung, which is preparing to launch its own tri-fold smartphone soon. With this competition heating up, foldable technology is quickly evolving from a luxury experiment to a powerful productivity tool.
Huawei has reportedly filed for regulatory approval with the model number GRL AL20, indicating the device is nearly ready for launch. If all goes as expected, the Mate XT 2 could become the second tri-fold phone to be mass produced globally, further pushing the limits of smartphone design.
