Zoom has taken a bold step into the future of work by introducing AI avatars and a more powerful AI assistant at its annual flagship event, Zoomtopia 2025. The company’s new AI Companion 3.0 and lifelike avatars aim to transform the way people attend, manage, and collaborate in meetings across platforms, making Zoom more than just a video conferencing tool.

AI Avatars That Represent You

The most eye catching feature is the introduction of AI avatars. These lifelike, photo realistic digital versions of users can attend meetings on their behalf, mimicking their live video feed in real time. For moments when participants want to appear polished without turning on the camera, these avatars offer a convincing alternative. Hosts can even customise waiting rooms with pre meeting instructions or agendas delivered via AI avatars, creating a seamless and professional experience for attendees. This feature is expected to roll out in December.

AI Companion 3.0 Goes Beyond Zoom

Zoom also revealed its upgraded AI Companion 3.0, which now works across not only Zoom meetings but also in person gatherings and competing platforms like Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Paid Zoom Workplace subscribers will be able to use the assistant to generate notes, prepare agendas, and even flag conflicts in scheduling. Its agentic AI allows it to retrieve information, summarise conversations, and create documents by pulling context from across Zoom Workplace as well as Google and Microsoft ecosystems.

One standout feature is called “free up my time,” which recommends meetings a user can skip based on their role and daily priorities. The assistant also offers in meeting recommendations and prepares users with summaries of past discussions and key action points. These updates will begin rolling out in November.

Smarter Tools for Workplaces

Zoom has bundled real time voice translation, collaborative document creation, 60fps high quality video, and Zoom Whiteboard into its Workplace package. Business subscribers who pay Rs 1,999 per month will also get access to Agentic AI Expert Assist to automate customer support tasks, generate customer experience insights, and monitor agent quality. Automated Quality Management is scheduled to launch in January 2026.

For industries such as healthcare, Zoom is introducing customised virtual agents that can handle patient intake, scheduling, insurance verification, and post visit follow ups. Educational institutions will benefit from upgrades to Zoom’s Video Management platform, allowing them to manage lectures and training content more effectively.

The Bigger Picture

Since its rise during the pandemic, Zoom has steadily expanded into AI powered productivity tools and enterprise solutions. By combining its federated AI strategy that uses models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and its own AI systems, Zoom aims to remain competitive in the crowded AI space.

CEO Eric Yuan has even suggested that AI could shorten the work week to just three or four days, freeing up time for employees while maintaining productivity. With features like AI avatars and AI Companion 3.0, that vision feels closer than ever.
