Artificial intelligence is transforming the world, but many people are more worried than excited. A new survey conducted by Reuters and Ipsos has revealed that Americans have serious concerns about the growing influence of AI. From fears of permanent job loss to the risk of political chaos, the results paint a picture of a society that is uncertain about what the future holds.
The biggest fear is job security. Seventy one percent of participants believe AI could permanently take away jobs. This concern comes at a time when many major companies have announced layoffs, raising doubts about whether humans will continue to have stable employment as AI becomes more advanced. Even if AI has not directly replaced all positions yet, the perception is enough to make people anxious about their careers.
Another major concern is politics. About seventy seven percent of those surveyed worry that AI can be misused to create political unrest. With elections happening around the world and the rise of deepfakes and misinformation, the possibility of AI being used as a tool for manipulation feels very real to many citizens.
The survey also highlights a more personal fear. Two thirds of respondents said they worry AI could replace real human connections and damage relationships. With people increasingly turning to digital companions and AI chatbots, there is a growing concern that technology might reduce the need for genuine human interaction.
Beyond jobs and relationships, the survey revealed even bigger worries. Sixty seven percent of people said AI could lead to uncontrollable consequences, and fifty eight percent believed it could risk the future of humankind itself. Nearly half of those surveyed even described AI as harmful to humanity overall.
While experts argue that the survey’s small sample size and tone of the questions may have influenced these results, the message is clear. Despite rapid innovation and the promises of efficiency, productivity, and convenience, trust in AI remains fragile. Many citizens see more danger than opportunity, and they believe urgent action is needed to regulate how this technology evolves.
The future of AI will depend on how responsibly companies and governments handle these concerns. Transparent policies, ethical safeguards, and a focus on human values will be critical if people are to feel safe about living in an AI-powered world. Until then, the debate between hope and fear is likely to continue.
