Google has expanded the capabilities of its popular NotebookLM platform with a major update to its Audio Overviews feature. The new update introduces four formats designed to provide users with flexible and engaging ways to interact with their notes and sources. The formats include Deep Dive, Brief, Critique, and Debate, each offering unique perspectives and presentation styles. Alongside this, the update brings new AI voices to enhance the listening experience.
Four Audio Overview Formats
The Deep Dive format remains the original style, featuring two AI hosts discussing and unpacking topics in detail. This format is ideal for users who want a thorough understanding of their sources through an interactive, podcast-style conversation.
The Brief format delivers a concise overview, perfect for users seeking a quick understanding of a topic. It features a single AI host summarising key points in a short and clear audio clip.
The Critique format provides expert-style feedback, allowing users to assess essays, research projects, or other academic work. This mode also has a single AI host and is designed to offer constructive analysis and suggestions.
Finally, the Debate format presents two AI hosts with opposing viewpoints, highlighting different perspectives and encouraging critical thinking. This format is particularly useful for exploring complex topics from multiple angles.
Customisation and Accessibility
Users can select their preferred audio format by clicking the pencil icon on the feature badge. A pop-up menu allows adjustments to the length of the audio and the selection of language. All formats, like Deep Dive, can be downloaded for offline listening. The update is rolling out globally across all 80 supported languages and will be fully available by the end of this week.
Enhanced AI Voices
Each audio format now includes new AI voices, designed to make the listening experience more natural and engaging. While Google has not revealed detailed differences between these voices, they promise to make conversations sound more authentic and immersive.
