OpenAI’s newest release, the ChatGPT Agent, is now finally reaching users after a week of anxious waiting. Originally announced on July 18, this new agent was expected to land immediately for Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers. But many users found themselves without access for several days. On Thursday, OpenAI confirmed that the agent is now fully rolled out for all eligible plans, though some users still claim they haven’t received it.

So what exactly is the ChatGPT Agent and why is it being talked about so much? In simple terms, this tool is a massive leap from the older Operator agent. While Operator allowed limited autonomous execution of tasks, the new Agent is built to handle multiple commands, perform advanced reasoning, and even code inside its own virtual computer environment.

ChatGPT Agent blends together the powers of three core systems. It uses browsing abilities similar to a web tool, processes information with the same depth as Deep Research, and holds the natural conversational fluency of regular ChatGPT. That means it can visit websites, interact with them, write code, access APIs, and even complete long, multi-step workflows with very little input from the user.

What sets this apart is its access to tools like a visual browser, a coding workspace, and platform connectors. That means it can fetch data from Gmail, collaborate on GitHub, or log into third-party accounts and perform tasks based on user commands. And if you ever want to step in, you can take over mid-task, tweak something, or even watch what the agent is doing through a live feed embedded in your chat window.

OpenAI has confirmed that the older Operator agent will be phased out soon, marking a shift toward more capable, dynamic AI assistants that can operate much like virtual employees. While the company didn’t clarify the cause of the rollout delay, the upgraded features suggest that this was a release worth waiting for.

For Pro users, the ChatGPT Agent currently comes with a cap of 400 agentic messages per month. This may expand as the tool becomes more mainstream and integrated into daily workflows.

With ChatGPT Agent, OpenAI is setting a new standard for how everyday users interact with AI. Whether it’s automating research, writing code, or managing your email workflows, the future of personal AI assistants just became a lot more real.
