Apple might be preparing its most powerful wireless charging feature yet with the iPhone 17. According to new regulatory filings, the upcoming iPhone lineup could support up to 50W wireless charging using updated MagSafe pads designed specifically for this purpose. This would mark a major leap from the current iPhone 16, which maxes out at 25W when paired with Apple’s 30W MagSafe charger.
The filings reveal two new MagSafe chargers listed on Taiwan’s National Communications Commission database. These new models, coded A3502 and A3503, look nearly identical to Apple’s existing MagSafe pads but contain upgraded internals. One of the notable differences is the inclusion of the Qi2.2 wireless charging standard, which is expected to offer faster and more efficient charging than previous generations.
Qi2.2 is the key to this upgrade. While the existing Qi2 standard allows speeds up to 15W, Qi2.2 raises the bar significantly by unlocking wireless charging potential up to 50W. The iPhone 17 is rumored to be the first Apple device to fully take advantage of this new protocol, allowing users to charge their phones at speeds previously limited to wired charging. That means quicker top ups without the need for cables, offering a new level of convenience for iPhone users.
The good news is that these upcoming MagSafe pads are expected to be backward compatible. They will work with iPhones as far back as the iPhone 11, although earlier models will not benefit from the full 50W speeds. Still, even older iPhones could see better charging efficiency and improved alignment due to the advancements in the new Qi2.2 standard.
While Apple has not officially confirmed the release, the timing of the certification suggests that the launch of these new MagSafe pads may align with the iPhone 17’s debut later this year. The iPhone 17 lineup is widely expected to arrive in September, continuing Apple’s annual update cycle.
This new development signals Apple’s growing focus on wireless performance and device convenience. With faster charging, upgraded hardware, and smart backward compatibility, Apple is positioning the iPhone 17 as not just an incremental upgrade, but a meaningful step forward in how users interact with everyday tech.
