OpenAI has just rolled out one of its most practical features yet for ChatGPT Plus users on Mac. The new Record Mode lets users record audio straight from their system, transcribe it in real time, and generate intelligent summaries   all without having to participate in or join a meeting. Whether it’s a team call, a brainstorming session, or just a voice note, ChatGPT can now help you turn spoken words into structured, usable content.

This update, previously limited to ChatGPT Team, Edu, and Enterprise subscribers, is now accessible to all ChatGPT Plus users through the ChatGPT app for macOS. The feature has not yet been launched for Windows users, but OpenAI has confirmed that the rollout is global for macOS Plus subscribers.

With Record Mode, users can capture up to 120 minutes of audio per session. The process is simple. Once the app is granted access to your microphone and system audio, a small record button appears at the bottom of the chat interface. Click it to start recording and pause or resume at any time. This tool works silently in the background, pulling in audio from your system and generating transcripts without disrupting your workflow.

What makes this feature especially powerful is what comes after the recording. OpenAI’s AI engine processes the audio and presents the output in a canvas-style format. These canvases give you an overview of key points and structure the conversation into readable, actionable summaries. With just a prompt, users can turn those notes into follow-up emails, detailed documentation, or even slide-ready outlines.

While the feature currently supports only English, OpenAI has confirmed that it is actively working on expanding language support and improving accuracy across regions. The company has also clarified that Record Mode is included in the ChatGPT Plus subscription at no extra cost   for now. Pricing changes could be introduced later as the feature scales across more platforms.

OpenAI demonstrated the tool’s capabilities in a recent YouTube video, showcasing how Record Mode can handle everything from corporate meetings to spontaneous voice notes. Since the feature doesn’t require ChatGPT to join a call as a participant, it works seamlessly with popular meeting apps like Zoom, Google Meet, and Teams without any extra setup or integration headaches.

The idea behind Record Mode is not just convenience. It is about transforming how people interact with meetings and spoken content. Instead of manually taking notes or relying on patchy recordings, users now have an AI assistant that listens, understands, and organises information with clarity and speed.

With workplace AI adoption growing fast, features like Record Mode highlight the evolving role of assistants like ChatGPT. No longer just chatbots, they are becoming integrated productivity tools that can keep pace with how people work, collaborate, and communicate.

Windows users may have to wait a little longer for the feature, but the macOS rollout sets the stage for what could soon become a default productivity tool across platforms.
